Son of James Liddell Purves K.C. and the late Eliza Emma Purves.
Husband of Teenie PURVES, L.L. Vale Road, Vermont, Vic.
Captain Philip Purves, son of the late famous K.C., has been very busy in the French trenches of late. He has added a bar to his Military Cross, and a second wound stripe to his khaki sleeve. Captain Purves, who went to Blighty to join up, got his commission in the North Staffordshire Regiment. His mother, who was one of the Brodribb clan, with her unmarried daughter, drifted to Blighty about three years ago to be near her three soldier sons, one of whom has since been killed in action. Another was listed with the missing. Mr. Jim Purves, of Toorak, half-brother of the khakied trio, received the news of Capt. Philip's new honour on Tuesday in last week.

The Major-General Commanding has very great pleasure in announcing that, under authority granted by His Majesty the King, the Commander-in-chief has made the following awards for gallantry in the Field -
MILITARY CROSS
Captain P.B. PURVES, 8th (S) Bn. North Staffordshire Regt.
For commanding and directing, with conspicuous courage and initiative, a successful raid on the German Trenches at THE BIRDCAGE on the night of the 20th March 1916. When lack of bombs caused the withdrawal of the bombing party earlier than was expected, he at once went forward, organised a rear party, searched the ground and successfully brought in all our wounded - 10 in number. This Officer's personal example did much to steady the men during a somewhat difficult withdrawal.
