At the time of enlistment Joseph was employed as a locomotive and wagon repairing blacksmith at Charters Towers, QLD.

Commenced return to Australia on 30 Janaury 1918 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 21 March 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane
