Frederick Layland Austin was born in July 1986 in South Australia, Australia and raised there. Frederick was 5’6 and a half and weighed 129 . His religion was Catholic. When he joined the army corps, he was 18 years and 8 months old on the 16th of March 1915.
While still in Australian he was then promoted 2 months later in May of 1915 to Lance Corporal. He embarked overseas on 31st May 1915 and was taken on strength at Gallipoli 4th September 1915. After several weeks he was sick from October 8th to the 13th and was sent to a hospital ship near Malta and was tranferred to England for futher treatment where he was admitted to hospital and reverted from the rank of Corporal to Private. Once he was better, he then proceeded to France on the 25th of July 1916
He was once again admitted to hospital from the 2nd to the 18th of September 1916 and then was discharged back to base depot on the 25th of October 1916. Then on the 14th of November he joined the unit. On the 2nd of December he was once again admitted to hospital and then was discharged back to base depot on the 2nd of April 1917.
He was wounded on the 30th of September 1917 moving towards the canal area near Reninghelst, Belgium by a hostile aircraft. Later in the year 1917 in October he embarked for England and then a day later he was injured in the right thigh and went to hospital. After he rejoined the battalion after hospital, he went absent without leave from the 22nd to the 29th of January 1918 and was punished for 14 days. Then on the 8th of February 1918 he rejoined the battalion and after 4 months he got shell shocked in battle and was sent to duty work on the 18th of July 1918.
On the 11th of August to the 14th of October 1918 he was charged for desertion AWL and he pleaded that he wasn't guilty but was found guilty and was sentenced to 5 years of PS on the 25/10/18 but it became 2 year sentence instead. He went to prison from December 1918 to July 1918 when his sentence was suspended. Frederick Layland Austin was officially discharged from the Australian army corps on the 9th of August 1919.
