James (John) Whamond was a 28 year old hairdresser who enlisted in the AIF in August 1914. He stated that he had had 6 years prior service in the school cadets. He embarked in October of that years and under took training in Egypt.
He arrived at Gallipoli in May 1915 and at some stage that month fell from a cliff and injured his back whilst coming in from the firing line. The injuries sustained caused him to be returned to Australia and he and his wife and children received a pension.
He is believed to have died in Victoria in 1960.
