Son of John Saunders Old and Emma Old nee Sweetlove of Stepney, London, England.

While living in England served with the Royal West Kent Regiment serving in the Boer War. Medal: South African War Medal with four clasps.

Husband of Ethel Emmaline Old nee Orr of Main Street, Rutherglen, Victoria. John and Ethel married during 1914 in Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 12 December 1918 aboard  HT Somerset disembarking on 15 January 1919.
