George enlisted in Sydney on the 14th of August 1914 and was part of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force. The force departed Sydney on HMAS Berrima on the 19th of August for New Guinea and consisted of a battalion of 1,000 infantry (The 1st Battalion, AN&MEF) and a small unit of 500 RAN Reservists. George was in E Company. The objectives of the Expeditionary Force were the German stations at Yap in the Caroline Islands, Nauru and at Rabaul, New Britain. George retuned to Australia and was discharged on the 28th of January 1915, the reason given was; termination of the period of engagement. He applied for a pension in 1920.
