Lance Corporal May Matthews (Service No:NF392020) served in the AWAS from 11 May 1942 to 2 September 1943 and was attached to NSW LoC Area Records Office (Clerk) at Discharge. Husband - Driver Horace James Matthews (Service Nos:3528/85840) - served in WWI and sons William and Harry served in WWII.
Born in 1893 at Inverell NSW (May listed 1900 as her birthdate on her Attestation Papers), May was the third of four children of Michael Lowery (b1857 at MacDonald River, NSW) and Anna Quinn (nee Shaughnessy; b1851 at Bundarra, NSW). Michael (a Labourer) and Anna married in 1888 in Inverell, NSW where they settled and raised their family and Michael was a Labourer.
In 1919 in Sydney NSW, May married Horace James Matthews (b1886 in Goulburn, NSW) - Horace served in WWI. The couple settled in Sydney where they raised their family and Horace was a Department Manager when he died in 1931. May lived in Sydney where she raised her sons and died shortly after medical discharge from the Army in 1943. Eldest son William was KiA in 1942 on board HMAS Perth.
