Son of Matthew C. Quinlan and Amy Quinlan of Chapman Street, Summer Hill, NSW. Brother of Francis Quinlan who served as Frank Quinlan and returned to Australia on 9 October 1919 having served with the Australian Army Medical Corps.

Husband of Lillian Quinlan nee Wilson of Blues Point Road, North Sydney, NSW. Matthew and Lillian married during 1914c in Sydney, NSW.

Commenced return to Australia on 15 January 1919 aboard HT City of Exeter disembarking on 6 March 1919
