Private Alfred Sidney Mountford (Service No:WX7817) enlisted in the Australian Army on 13 August 1940 and was attached to Reinforcements Reception Depot when he was Discharged as Medically Unfit on 13 September 1940. Three sons served in WWII - Sidney George, Walter Henry and Thomas Edward - and Stanley (Private; Service No:WX500700) served with the BCOF in Japan from 1946 to 1948.
Sid was born in 1901 in Clyro, Wales and in 1920 (a Farm Labourer) he married Margaret Kathleen Eleanor Pugh (b1902 in Swansea, Wales). In 1926 Sid and Margaret immigrated with their four children, arriving in Albany WA on board the Herminius. The family settled in Margaret River near Cowarumup at Great Hope Valley as Settlers. Following great hardship, they (like many others) walked off the block and lived in Picton Junction before moving to Collie where Sid was a Labourer and Orchardist. They relocated to Chidlow where Sid was a Storekeeper and he and Margaret sold home made pies and pasties. Following a heart attack, Sid sold the shop and he and Margaret moved to Perth. Sid died in 1985 and Margaret in 1991.
