Son of David Harrison Unwin and Ellen Unwin nee Hartley of Micalo Island via Palmers Island, NSW. Brother of Frederick Clarence Unwin who returned to Australia on 6 March 1919 having served with the 1st Machine Gun Company.

9 February 1915 - enlisted at Grafton, NSW with the 25th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

9 April 1917 - transferred to the 7th Machine Gun Company

Commenced return to Australia on 12 March 1918 aboard HT Kenilworth Castle disembarking on 22 May 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

29 June 1918 - discharged at the 1st Military District as medically unfit due to chronic bronchitis
