Son

MOFFATT, Pte. Mervyn Francis, 13810. Australian Army Medical Corps. Died of sickness 10th Oct., 1916. Age 19. Son of Benjamin and Maria Moffatt, of 58, Burlington St., Crow's Nest, Sydney, New South Wales. Cowley (St. Lawrence) Churchyard (Australian Section, Grave No. 8), Middlesex.

940 Private Richard Benjamin Moffatt, 2nd Battalion, AIF, enlisted very early in August 1914, and gave his age and occupation as 35 year old marine fireman, living at Newcastle. He left Australia as an original member of E Company, 2nd Battalion, took part in the Landing at Anzac Cove, and served at Gallipoli until he was eventually killed in action on the 28 July 1915.

He was originally buried in Brown’s Dip Cemetery, about 500 yards south of Anzac Cove and in 1923 was reinterred in the Lone Pine Cemetery due to flooding of the cemetery. He must have understated his age slightly as he was born in 1875, so he was 40 years of age when he died. He was the father of five children, aged between 5 and 18 years.

His eldest child, 13810 Private Mervyn Francis Moffatt, of the Australian Army Medical Corps AIF, enlisted at the age of 18, about 4 weeks after his father had been killed. Mervyn died from a cerebral haemorrhage whilst in England on the 10 October 1916, only six months after arriving. His widowed mother Maria Moffatt was living in Crow's Nest, Sydney at the time. Mervyn is buried in England, at the Cowley (St. Lawrence) Churchyard in Middlesex. His 4 younger siblings were awarded pensions.
