Died on this date - 8th May.......Horace William McCarthy was born at Yatala, South Australia in 1890. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 26th July, 1915 as a 24 year old Clerk from Eden Hills, South Australia.

Private Horace William McCarthy married Elsie Mary Lyne on 15th September, 1915. He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on 27th October, 1915 & disembarked at Egypt then to England.
Private McCarthy was promoted to Temporary Corporal on 1st April, 1916 while in England then promoted to Corporal on 24th January, 1917 while posted at Tidworth, Wiltshire.

Corporal McCarthy was promoted to Acting Lance Sergeant on 21st February, 1917 at Rollestone, Wiltshire.

Acting Lance Sergeant was attached to Permanent Cadre of 6th Training Battalion at Fovant, WIltshire on 21st November, 1917.
Lance Sergeant Horace William McCarthy was admitted to the Military Hospital at Fovant, Wiltshire on 8th May 1918 but died at 7.55 pm on 8th May from Phthisis. He was buried in Compton Chamberlayne Cemetery, Wiltshire where 27 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
