Francis Charles Fry was born in 1889 to Francis Chas Fry and Mrs Fry in Devonport, Tasmania. Prior to the war he worked as a motor mechanic.
After his school years, he joined the army in 1908, when he was 19. Francis spent 6 years in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Francis spent 6 years in the army until 1914.
At age 26 in 1915, Francis enlisted to fight in the 27th battalion during World War 1. Upon enlistment on the 26th of July 1915, Francis was positioned as an acting corporal due to his previous 6 years’ experience in the Royal Garrison Artillery. After Francis was accepted into the army, he was given the service numbers 2563 and sent to war. He embarked on board the HMAT A24 Benalla on the 27th of October in 1915 and sent to Egypt, meaning he arrived after the withdrawal from Gallipoli.
In Egypt, Francis was transferred to the 10th Battalion and went with that unit to France in early April 1916. In late July he was sent to hospital sick, and returned to duty in September. In November Francis was evacuated to England with trench feet. He never properly recovered from this, and in September 1917 was returned to Australia for discharge. He left military service on 23 November 1917.
