Private Jean Matheson (Service No:VF345303) enlisted in the AWAS on 19 May 1942 and was attached to the Canteen Board - appointed Canteen Attendant. Private Matheson was attached to Victorian Line of Communication Canteens at Discharge on 15 September 1944.
Jean was born in Williamstown, Victoria in 1919, eldest child of Bertie George Matheson (b1893 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Edith Burns (b1894 in Williamstown, Victoria). Bertie (an Assistant Storeman) and Edith married in 1919 in Williamstown, and settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Bertie worked as an Assistant Storeman and Shoemaker.
Jean worked as a Salesgirl for Edments Ltd on leaving school. In 1944 she married James Worland (b1918 in Seymour, Victoria) - James, a Horticulturalist, had served in the AIF and the ACMF. Jean and James moved to Devonport Tasmania, then to Toowoomba, QLD, before settling in Darwin NT where they raised their family and James was Curator of Parks and Gardens. In the mid 1960s Jean and James returned to Melbourne, where James worked as a Horticulturalist until his death in 1969. Jean died in 1996.
