Private Clifford Osborne Henshaw (Service No:6794) enlisted in the AIF on 20 September 1916 and embarked from Melbourne with 6th Infantry Battalion on 25 October 1916 on board HMAT Ulysses A38. In France (near Harbonnieres) on 23 August 1918, Private Henshaw Died of Wounds - GSW to his right leg and was buried at Lone Farm Cemetery near Harbonnieres - his tombstone is at Heath Cemetery. Included in his personal effects were a rosary and testament, a brooch and damaged gold ring and letters and photos. Siblings Melville and Ralph also served in WWI.
Born in 1893 in Zeehan Tasmania, Clifford was the second of six children of John Henshaw (b1863 in New Norfolk, Tasmania) and Elizabeth Mary Woodward (b1865 in Port Cygnet, Tasmania). John (a Labourer) and Elizabeth married in 1890 in Hobart, Tasmania and settled in Zeehan where they raised their family.
In 1915 Clifford was a Labourer in Melbourne Victoria when he married Zilla Crook (b1897 in Melbourne, Victoria). Clifford and Zilla moved to Zeehan, Tasmania and following Clifford's death Zilla and their two children settled in Melbourne where Zillah later remarried. In 1919 Zilla inserted a Memorium in the Zeehan and Dundas Herald on behalf of herself, her Father-in-Law John and her two children:
'Our loved one is sleeping his long last sleep
And his grave I may never see
But some gentle hand in that far distant land
May plant a small flower for me.
And our hearts must ache in this waiting time,
For the day that used to be;
For a bidden smile and a Face and form
That we loved so much to see'
