Died on this date – 15th June.... Pte Alfred John Skinner was born at Stoke Newington, London in 1880. He departed from the port of London, England for Australia on 6th June, 1913 aboard the Orama, aged 32.

Alfred John Skinner enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 29th May, 1916 as a 35 year old, single, Greengrocer. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 20th October, 1916 with the 13th Machine Gun Company, 6th Reinforcements. He was transferred to Ulysses (A38) at Sierra Leone on 5th December, 1916 & finally disembarked at Devonport, England on 28th December, 1916.

Private Skinner was posted to Australian Details No. 6 – 7 Camp at Perham Downs, near Tidworth, Wiltshire on 29th December, 1916. He was transferred to 5th Divisional Machine Gun Company from 13th Machine Gun Corps at Perham Downs on 13th February, 1917 & then attached to 3rd Training Battalion at Durrington, Wiltshire for Bombing Instruction from 27th May, 1917 to 1st June, 1917.

Private Skinner proceeded overseas to France via Southampton on 7th September, 1917. He was wounded in action – gassed on 24th April, 1918 & admitted to Casualty Clearing Station. Private Skinner was admitted to Convalescent Depot & rejoined his Unit on 8th July, 1918.

Private Skinner was on leave to UK from France from 12th October, 1918 & rejoined his Unit on 29th October, 1918. He was marched out of France with Draft 41 on 23rd April, 1919, arriving back in England on 30th April, 1919 – in readiness for his return to Australia.

Private Skinner was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 7th June, 1919 with Carbuncle Neck from Monte Video Hospital at Weymouth.

Private Alfred John Skinner died at 4.45 am on 15th June, 1919 at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Sutton Veny of Pleurisy.

He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 Australian Nurses are laid to rest.
