Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Audrey Ruby Polley (Service No:VF345815) served in the AWAS with 1 Australian Army Canteen Service (AACS) and LHQ Signals - graded Cook - from 5 September 1942 to 19 February 1946. Three brothers - Walter, Douglas and James - also served in WWII.

Audrey was born in Geelong, Victoria in 1920, tenth of eleven (and youngest surviving) children of Charles Baker Polley (b1875 in Connewarre via Geelong, Victoria) and Minnie Violet Milsom (b1880 in London, England) - Minnie immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1889, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Liguria. Charles (a Farmer) and Minnie married in 1907 in Geelong and settled at Connewarre, where they raised their family and Charles was a Farmer.

Audrey was living at home in Connewarre when she enlisted in the AWAS. In 1949 in Geelong, Audrey married Robert Drummond Bowers (aka Robert Drummond; b1922 in Glasgow, Scotland). Audrey and Robert lived in Winchelsea and Wallington, where they raised their family and Robert worked as a Carpenter. By 1972 the couple had separated - Robert moved to Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia, where he died in 1985. Audrey remained in Wallington, where she died in 2008.
