Daughter of Thomas Alfred RUTHERFORD, Millde Camp, Catherine Hill Bay, New South Wales.
Muriel is a veteran of the Second World War. Before enlisting, she worked at Vickery’s factory, manufacturing uniforms for service personnel. In November 1943, Muriel joined the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS) and served within Australia.
During the war, Muriel married Lois ‘Lew’ Beasley who was a driver in the Australian Army. She discharged from the AWAS in November 1945.
After the war, Muriel and Lew raised two children and share-farmed in Bonville, NSW. Sadly, Lew died in 2007.
When Muriel was younger, she played tennis and enjoyed crafts. These days, she likes to read and enjoys puzzles.
And the secret to Muriel’s longevity? She has always been independent, led a healthy lifestyle and ‘just soldiered on’.
