Private Beryl Jean Pickering (Service No:Vf509192) served in the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) with No 2 and No Australian Base Ordnance Depots (BOD) - graded Storewoman - from 18 May 1943 to 9 May 1944.
Beryl was born in Hopetoun, Victoria in 1922, third of nine children of Albert Henry Pickering (b1899 in Stawell, Victoria) and Ethel Ellen Anderson (b1898 in Stawell, Victoria). Albert was a Farm Labourer at Fyan's Creek via Stawell in 1915 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge, worked as a Labourer in Hopetoun. He and Ethel married in Stawell in 1921, and settled in Hopetoun where they raised their family. Albert was a Labourer until 1930, when he became a Farmer at Nyallo via Hopetoun (Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act). Albert served in the ACMF in WWII, and in the early 1950s he and Ethel retired to Hopetoun.
Beryl enlisted in the Army in 1943, and in 1944 married Elbert Reginald Dale (b1923 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Elbert was a Private (Service Nos:N211745/NX122607) in the Army. Following their Discharge from the Army, Beryl and Elbert separated - Elbert settled in Sydney and later remarried. Beryl returned to Hopetoun, where in 1958 she remarried to Ronald (Ron) Edward Mill (b1933 in Hopetoun, Victoria). Beryl and Ron settled in Hopetoun, where Ron was a Farmer until his death in 2007. Beryl died in 2014.
