Son of George Henry Vitnell of Eugowra Public School, Orange, NSW and Sarah Elizabeth Vitnell of Melrose Calvert Street, Marrickville, NSW.
Brother of Horace Gordon Vitnell who returned to Australia on 18 September 1917 having served with the 4th Battalion and brother of William John Henry Vitnell whoi returned to Australia on 28 August 1917 having served with the 12th Light Horse Regiment
Commenced return to Australia on 18 January 1919 aboard HT Ulysses disembarking on 4 March 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
