One of four siblings who served in WWII, Private Elizabeth Chalmers Horne (Service No:VF514148) served in the AWAS (20 November 1943 - 8 March 1944) with 4 AWAS Trainng Battalion and District Accounts Office (Vic) - graded Clerk.

Betty was born in Warrnambool, Victoria in 1913, eighth of nine children of William Horne (b1869 in Warrnambool, Victoria) and Catherine Imlah (b1874 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland). William and Catherine married in 1900 in Warrnambool, where they settled and raised their family before moving to Hamilton - William was a Grazier. In the 1940s Attestation Papers of his children, William was listed as 'Major Horne'.

Betty worked in Balmoral as Secretary of the Balmoral Branch of the Red Cross Society before moving to Melbourne in 1941, and was a Clerk in 1943 when she enlisted in the AWAS. In 1944 in Balmoral, Betty married John Alan Kelsall (b1906 in Hamilton, Victoria) - John was a Gunner in the AIF (Service No:VX27295). Betty and John settled at Cavendish via Hamilton, where they raised their family and John was a Grazier. John died in 1984 and Betty in 2005.
