Private Marie Marguerite Gwynne (Service No:WF96342) served in the AWAS from 6 September 1942 to 24 October 1944 - Trade Group: Istrument Operator. Private Gwynne was attached to 419 Heavy Anti Aircraft Gun Station, 803 Anti Aircraft and Coastal Artillery Battery and 29 Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery. Older brother Ron (Private; Service No:WX10423) served with 2/48th Infantry Battalion and younger brother Victor (Corporal; WX500024) served with the Line Construction Project Squadron.
Marie was born in Woodanilling via Katanning, Western Australia in 1923, second of three children of Spencer Gwynne DCM, MiD (b1891 in Eurelia, South Australia) and Florence Mary Dival (b1898 in Hampshire, England). Florence had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1911, arriving in Fremantle on board the Omrah and settling in Woodanilling, and Spencer had arrived on the Western Australian Goldfields in the early 1900s, and was a Farmer in Woodanilling when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915 (Lieutenant; Service No:413). Spencer and Florence married in 1920 in Woodanilling, where they settled and raised their family and Spencer was Secretary of the Woodanilling Roads Board. In the 1930s the family moved to Mingenew - Spencer was Secretary of the Mingenew Roads Board, before moving to Armadale in the late 1930s - Spencer was Secretary of the Armadale Roads Board. Spencer was active in his local communities - as a Member of the RSL, Hospital Association and Parents and Citizens Association, Captain and Manager of the cricket team, and member of Rotary, Trotting and Bowls Clubs. In WWII, Spencer served in the ACMF (Lieutenant; Service No:47851).
Marie worked as a Clerk and Shop Assistant, and was a member of the Armadale Voluntary Emergency Corps before enlisting in the AWAS in 1942. In 1944 in Perth, Marie married Mervyn Roy Drummond (b1920 in Moora, Western Australia) - Mervyn was a Private (Service No:WX17522) in the Army. Marie and Mervyn lived in Armadale, where Mervyn was a Farmer, until their Divorce in 1950. Mervyn remarried, and Marie settled in Armadale where she raised her family and worked as a Typist. Marie died in 2015.
