Captain Herbert Jacob Matthews (Service No:NX177996) initially enlisted in the AIF on 4 September 1941 as a Private (Service No:NX44287), and served with the Australian Postal Corps and 2/7 Field Regiment in the Middle East (17 November 1941 - 3 March 1943). Signaller Matthews was Discharged on 5 May 1943 to enlist the following day at Royal Military College Duntroon with Corps of Staff Cadets (Service No:NP10182). On 5 April 1944 Lieutenant Matthews enlisted in the AIF and was attached to Australian Corps of Signals, serving in Borneo and Macassar with MAKForce (2 June 1945 - 25 December 1945), and in Darwin NT as Signal Officer in 1946. Captain Matthew's appointment was terminated on 30 June 1946, and he enlisted in the Interim Army on 1 July 1947. Captain Matthews was attached to HQ Southern Command whilst attending Melbourne University as a Medical Student until 8 August 1948.
Herb was born in Peak Hill, NSW in 1921, eldest son of Herbert (Bert) Norman Matthews (b1891 in Peak Hill, NSW) and Eileen Sylvia Hocking (b1895 in Parkes, NSW). Bert (a Dairy Farmer) and Eileen married in Parkes in 1920 - Herb had served in the AIF in WWI (Private; Service No:67439) - and settled in Peak Hill, where they raised their family and Bert was a Dairy Farmer.
Herb worked as a Labourer in Peak Hill before enlsiting in the Army, and in 1946 in Melbourne, Vctoria he married Patricia Eileen Jordan (b1921 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Patricia was working as a Clerk in Melbourne. Following his Discharge from the Army, Herb and Patricia settled in Peak Hill NSW, where they raised their family and Herb was a Farmer at Waratah. In the early 1960s, Herb and Patricia were living in Tullamore, NSW, where Herb was Publican of the Tullamore Hotel. In the early 1970s they moved to the Gold Coast in QLD, where they lived in Surfer's Paradise and Labrador, and Herb was a Motel Manager. Herb and Patricia returned to Parkes NSW, where Patricia died in 1994 and Herb in 2008.
