Biography contributed by Flynn Hawkey

Samuel Stewart Shillabeer was born on the 29th of September, 1898, on Attyford Farm, One Tree Hill. He was the son of Samuel and Sarah Shillabeer.

According to his AIF Service Record he was blue-eyed, brown-haired with a medium complexion. He was rather tall, standing at 6 foot 1 and weighing 193 pounds.

Samuel was a sibling of twelve others, him being the fourth eldest. His older siblings were Adelaide, Basil and Andrew with his younger siblings being Kennith, Hedley, Leslie, Gladys, Russel, Doris, Gordon, Alan and Douglas. Samuel and several of his siblings and cousins attended One Tree Hill Public School. Him and his siblings are all Methodists.

He enlisted his place as a A.I.F. private on the 29th of September, 1916 on his 18th birthday. He was enthusiastic to go to war the moment he became of age.

His brother, Andrew Willam Shillabeer, also enlisted to go to war at 19 a few months before Samuel. This was a year before Samuel and he was killed in action shortly after Samuel embarked.

He embarked onto the HMAT A30 Borda on the 23rd of June 1917 from Adelaide, ready and eager to serve his country. He joined the 10th Battalion, 24th Reinforcement as a private.

During his time at war, he was wounded several times including a gunshot wound to the buttock. Despite this, he returned home safely on the 6th of July, two years after his embarkation.
