Lindsay was the eldest of two children of Leslie James Bickford (b1887 in Melbourne, Victorai) and Ruby Vicky Jones (b1890 in Yatala, South Australia). Leslie - a Commercial Traveller - and Ruby married in Perth WA in 1918. Leslie served in WWI (Lieutenant; 11th Infantry Battalion) and WWII (Lieutenant; Service No:W83132) with the Volunteer Defence Corps. He and Ruby settled in Perth to raise their family and Leslie was a Commercial Traveller and Departmental Manager.

Lindsay was a Clerk with the Harbour Trust when he enlisted with the Militia in 1938 (Corporal; 16th Battalion) and in September 1940 he enlisted in the RAAF (Aircraftman 1; Service No:17898). Discharged in September 1941, Lindsay enlisted in the Australian Army (Sergeant; Service No:WX35625). He was attached to District Accounts Office New Guinea when he was Discharged in April 1946. Brother Colin James served with the RAAF (Service No:415607).

Lindsay settled back in Perth, WA where he was working as a Clerk in 1947 when he married Marjorie Joan Green (b1920 in Perth WA). Lindsay and Marjorie settled in Perth where Lindsay was a Clerk. Marjorie died in 1998 and Lindsay in 2017.
