World War 2 Service

24 Apr 1941: Wounded Australian Military Forces (WW2) , Corporal, W96477, 6th Australian Field Artillery Battery, "Operation Lustre" Greece 1941, Badly wounded in the right arm by tracer bullets. He was sent to Cairo Hospital and later returned and discharged from the Army in Perth.

Sir David Brand was born in Dongara, Western Australia, on 1 August 1912 to Albert John Brand (b 27 Dec 1883 d 1952) and Hilda Mitchell (b 22 July 1890 d 6 Sept 1967). They were farmers in the district. 

He enlisted on 23 Nov 1939 and was assigned to 2/11 Battalion, part of the 6th Division which embarked on 20 April 1940.When David returned from the War in Greece in 1942, he was wounded in his right arm.

He bought a grocery shop in Dongara in 1944 when he married Doris Elspeth McNeill (1921-2009) and kept it for 4 years.

He was approached by the newly formed Liberal Party members to run as a candidate for the seat of Greenough. He became the Premier of WA in 1959 and held the Office for almost 12 years.

Sir David Brand was knighted in 1969. He was the longest State Member for Greenough (1945-1975) serving 30 years.

David Brand's  contribution to the State of Western Australia cannot be understated as he was instrumental in the State's economic success.
