Private Lionel James Gittoes (Service No:N298249) enlisted in the ACMF with 31st Battalion VDC on 20 March 1942, and was attached to Corps HQ at Discharge on 16 November 1943.
Lionel was born in Gundagai, New South Wales in 1885, sixth of eleven children of George William Gittoes (b1851 at Spring Creek, New South Wales) and Agnes Mary Clemson (b1855 in Sydney, New South Wales). George (a Farmer at The Oaks) and Agnes married in Sydney in 1872, and settled at Nangus via Gundagai and then Tumblong via Adelong Crossing, where they raised their family and George was a Grazier.
Lionel worked as a Farmer/Labourer in Nangus where, in 1908, he married Ethel (May) Mary Brown (b1888 in Bulli, New South Wales). The couple lived in Nangus before moving in 1910 to Byangum via Byron, where Lionel was a Labourer. The following year they moved to Palmvale (and then Scott's Creek) via Murwillumbah, where they settled and raised their family and Lionel was a Banana Farmer. Lionel died in 1967 and May in 1978.
