My Uncle

Kelvin was my dad's brother. Both he and my dad enlisted but my father was rejected due to a heart murmur.

Kelvin served in the Middle East from November 1941 to March 1942.

He was returned to Australia to be redirected to the war effort in Papua New Guinea and was dropped into Port Moresby in Septem 1942.

Kelvin was wounded in action (23/10/1942 - Mortar Wounds) and spent two months in hospital and then four months recuperating in Sydney.

In May 1943 he was returned to restricted duty until July where the Ned Board assessed him fit for active duty.

He was transferred into the Signal Corp and underwent signals training.

In January 1944 he 'accidentally' sprained left wrist and fortunately advised that there would be no Court of Inquiry over how the injury occurred.

Despite efforts to rejoin the action, due to minor and major wounds suffered both in the Middle East and PNG, Kelvin was unable to march for long periods and after fronting a medical review board he was declare Unfit for Duty on the 8th February, 1945 and formally discharged May 1945.

Kelvin suffered many health issues as a result of his war wounds over the years along with 'some persistent nightmares' and eventually in May 1992 he passed away at age 69.

Kelvin was always a true gentleman and honest businessman and loved his wife Coral dearly. Due to injuries he sustained he was unable to have children.

He told me many stories but never what happened or how he sprained his wrist!

RIP dear Uncle Kelvin
