Jane was the daughter of James Thomas Penny and Mary Penny nee Nankervis.

Enlisted as "Jenny Penny" as a Staff Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Service on 17.9.1915 and served in England and France. Promoted to Sister on 1.10.1918. Discharged 12.4.1919.   Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
