Biography contributed by Sandra Dexter

Lance-Corporal Hasselbach was the second son of Mr and Mrs E. Hasselbach, Wandsworth Rd, Surrey Hills. He was one of the best known hockey players in and around Melbourne, playing for Surrey Hills for 2 or 3 years.

He was always keen on military matters with the junior cadets at the Balwyn State School and afterwards with the Victorian Rangers, serving with them till they were disbanded. Later he joined the Victorian Scottish Regiment to which he belonged up to the time of his enlistment.

He left Melbourne with the First Expeditionary Force as a private in the 5th Battalion, and won his stripe in Egypt. On the 2 May he received shrapnel wounds. Whilst in hospital, he was killed by a shell.

Ward was 23 years and 11 months of age.
