Warrant Officer I Laurence Douglas Sydney Payne (Service Nos:N248167/NX178911) initially served in the Militia (Service No:09/280577) from 1 February 1923 prior to enlisting in the ACMF as a Private on 6 March 1942. Promoted to WOII, he was attached to EC Ordnance Depot when he Discharged on 23 June 1944 to enlist in the AIF the following day. WOI Payne served with Ordnance Depot (Examination and Stocktaking Staff), and was attached to HQ 2 Australian Army at Discharge on 19 November 1945.

Syd was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1909, second of four children of Laurence (Doug) Edgar Douglas Payne (b1878 in Sussex, England) and Jessie Shirlaw Thomson (b1879 in Glasgow, Scotland). Doug and Jessie married by Special Licence in Eastern Cape, South Africa in 1903, and immigrated with their first child to Sydney. Doug and Jessie settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Doug worked as a Carpenter and Salesman.

Syd started work as a Clerk in Sydney, where in 1932 he married his first wife Mabel (May) Rebecca Smith (b1909 in Sydney, New South Wales). Syd and May settled in Sydney, where they raised their family. Syd was an Accountant and Business Manager in 1942 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Syd and May divorced and both remarried - Syd in 1952 to Mary (Beryl) May Tayler (nee Burt; b1910 in Blaney, New South Wales). Syd and Beryl settled in Sydney, where Syd was an Accountant and Business Executive. In the 1970s the couple moved to Empire Bay - Syd died in Blayney in 1987 and Beryl in Orange in 1992.
