Captain Neville Francis Babbage (Service Nos:N393156/NX140308) initially served in the ACMF as a Lieutenant with the AAMC (25 March 1942 - 9 October 1942), volunteering for service in the AIF on 10 October 1942. Appointed Captain on 13 November 1942, he served with 2/12 Australian Field Ambulance, and was appointed RMO 8th Battalion on 6 April 1944. Captain Babbage served in New Guinea (19 May 1944 - 1 November 1944) as MO attached to 17th Australian Field Ambulance, and was attached to 113 Australian (Concord) Military Hospital at Termination of Appointment on 19 February 1946.
Neville was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1912, second of three children of Francis Eden Babbage (b1873 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Eleanor Mary Molesworth (b1877 in Sydney, New South Wales). Francis was a Clerk with the Bank of Australasia in 1903 when he and Eleanor married in Sydney, where they settled and raised their family - Francis was a Bank Official until retirement.
Neville studied Medicine at The University of Sydney, graduating in 1935 (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), and worked as a Medical Practitioner in Grafton, before studying in Edinburgh in 1938 (Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons: FRCS Ed). In 1939 in Sydney he married Shirley Wish Garrett (b1916 in Sydney, New South Wales), and in 1940 was appointed Government Medical Officer at Emmaville. Following his Discharge from the Army, Neville and Shirley settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Neville was a Medical Practitioner. Neville died in 2001 and Shirley in 2006.
