George was the son of Thomas WHITE & Sophia MORRIS and was born on the 5th of July 1897 in Carey Gully, SA.

His parents were married on the 16th of August 1892 in Adelaide.

His father was the son of George WHITE & Anne HORSMAN and was born on the 15th of October 1866 in Carey Gully, SA.
His mother was the daughter of Thomas MORRIS & Sophia WARHURST and was born on the 20th of August 1870 in Rosewater, SA.

George was the fourth child born into this family of 8 children.

His father was a market gardener and the family lived in Carey Gully.

George and his siblings attended the Carey Gully Public School and George joined the Senior Cadets.

When he aged out of the Senior Cadets he transferred to the 79th Infantry Battalion.

On the 3rd of February 1917 his brother Herbert enlisted into the AIF (39087) and was posted to the Field Artillery Brigade, 33rd Reinforcements.
Herbert embarked from Melbourne on board SS Indarra on the 26th of November 1917.

On leaving school Herbert became a gardener and helped his father of the market garden.

George tried to enlist into the AIF but was first rejected due to his teeth.

Then, at the age of 21, George successfully reenlisted into the 1st AIF on the 15th of July 1918 in Adelaide and allotted the service number 62374 and posted to B Company in Mitcham Camp on the 6th of August. He was then posted to the 5th South Australian General Reinforcements on the 14th of August.

George embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A37 Barambah on the 31st of August 1918 and whilst on the voyage he was admitted into the Ships Hospital for 3 days suffering from Influenza on the 10th of October.

He disembarked in London on the 14th of November 1918 and remained in England until he embarked from England on board HT Aeneas on the 22nd of November 1919. After spending Christmas 1919 on board the ship he disembarked in Adelaide on the 6th of January 1920.

George was discharged from the AIF on the 30th of January 1920.

George married Marjory Lorna STEPHENS on the 8th of March 1922 in the Thomas Street Methodist Church, Broken Hill, NSW.
Marjory was the daughter of William John STEPHENS & Lillian May HOLZBERGER and was born on the 8th of March 1904 in Broken Hill, NSW.

They welcomed their first child; Allan Alfred, on the 28th of August 1923 in Broken Hill and then the following year they moved back to Carey Gully.

They then welcomed their next son Ross into the family and George returned to his father’s market garden.

By 1940 they had moved to Uraidla and George joined the Stirling RSL Sub-Branch.

On the 2nd of February 1942 their son Allan joined the CMF and then enlisted into the 2nd AIF on the 21st of July 1942 (SX22476).

George died on the 25th of September 1943 at his home in Uraidla and was buried in the Summertown Cemetery the following day; General, Section 13, Row 4, Plot 643.

George’s name appears on the Forest Road Methodist Church Honour Board.

After George’s death Marjory married Robert John RANGER on the 28th of September 1946 in Maughan Methodist Church, Adelaide.

During the 1980s, the White family donated a 15-hectare portion of their property comprising undeveloped scrub to the National Parks and Wildlife Service. This is now part of the Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park.

Marjory died on the 5th of March 1998 and was cremated and interred in the Centennial Park Cemetery; Columbarium, Rose Bed 1, Niche 029.

Military

At the age of 21, George enlisted into the 1st AIF on the 15th of July 1918 in Adelaide and allotted the service number 62374 and posted to B Company in Mitcham Camp on the 6th of August.
He listed his father, of Carey Gully, as his next of kin.

He was then posted to the 5th South Australian General Reinforcements on the 14th of August.

George embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A37 Barambah on the 31st of August 1918 and whilst on the voyage he was admitted into the Ships Hospital for 3 days suffering from Influenza on the 10th of October.

He disembarked in London on the 14th of November 1918 and marched into No.2 Camp Details in Park House, near Tidworth and was posted to the 27th Battalion in the 5th Training Battalion.

On the 1st of February 1919 George was posted to the AIF Depot in Tidworth and on the 22nd he was admitted into Delhi Military Hospital in Tidworth with Acute Tonsillitis and Influenza.
After 3 weeks he was discharged to the Training Depot on the 14th of March and remained at the AIF Headquarters in Tidworth on duty processing returning soldiers from the front.

George embarked from England on board HT Aeneas on the 22nd of November 1919 and after spending Christmas 1919 on board the ship he disembarked in Adelaide on the 6th of January 1920.

George was discharged from the AIF on the 30th of January 1920 and awarded the British War Medal.
