Sergeant Henry Gordon Goode (Service No:NX6596) enlisted in the AIF on 5 May 1941 as a Private attached to General Details Depot. Private Goode served in the Middle East (1 November 1941 - 28 May 1942) and New Guinea (10 March 1944 - 13 June 1944), and was attached to Allied Services NCO Club on 9 November 1944 when he was promoted to Corporal. Promoted to Sergeant on 16 June 1945, he was attached to Australian Army Amenities Service at Discharge on 2 May 1946.
Harry was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1915, eldest of three children of Bernard Arthur Goode (b1890 in Rockhampton, QLD) and Bridget (Biddy) Eileen O'Connor (b1891 in Brisbane, QLD). Bernard worked at Mt Morgan Gold Mines before moving to Brisbane in 1913 and working as a Journalist with the Brisbane Daily Mail. Bernard and Biddy married in 1914 in Brisbane, where Bernard joined the Public Service, initially as a Shorthand Reporter for the Department of Justice, and in 1918 was a Hansard Reporter at Parliament House. In the early 1920s Bernard and Biddy moved their family to Melbourne, where Bernard was a Hansard Reporter. By 1930 Bernard had moved his family to Canberra, where he served for thirty years as a Hansard Reporter in Federal Parliament.
Harry joined the Public Service on leaving school, and was a Clerk in Canberra in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1944 in Sydney, Harry married Ailsa Patricia Croll (b1925 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Ailsa was working as a Stenographer in Sydney. Following his Discharge from the Army, Harry and Ailsa settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Harry worked as a Clerk/Postal Officer with the Postmaster General's Department until his death in 1962. Ailsa died in 1981.
