John Newman Cosstick was the fifth child of six children born to his parents, James (Jim) Charles Cosstick and Harriett Jane Choon, who were married on 10 January 1894 at West Maitland.  His father James was a son of Sam Cosstick, a pioneer Australian cricketer in the mid 1800s.  Sam played for Victoria and New South Wales and also against visiting English sides in the 1860s and 1870s prior to Test Cricket.  On his retirement he settled in Maitland, N.S.W.
