Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

88 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 18th May 1935, Private Lancelot Phillis Richards, referred to as Lance, 35th Battalion (Reg No-2384), tailor and fitter's labourer from "St. Heliers", 3 Patrick Street, Merewether, New South Wales and Junction Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and Lockyer and King Streets, Adamstown, N.S.W., father of six, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 42. CATHOLIC 1-09. 8.

Note – different spellings RICHARDS - (Lancelott, Lancelotte), (Phillip, Philip, Philas).

Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 31st March 1893 as Lancelot A to William Arthur and Louisa Richards nee Phillis; husband of Veronica Ann Richards nee Ward (married 1914, Merewether, N.S.W., died 19.8.1952, sleeping here), Lance enlisted on the 27th April 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (shell shock - neurasthenia, Battle of Messines), 22.8.1918 (contusions to ribs).

Daughter Gladys Muriel Richards, born ? ? 1914, Merewether, N.S.W., died 16.4.1918, age 4, reported drowned, sleeping same location.

Invalided to England 25.8.1918.

Lance was invalided home on the 1st February 1919, being discharged on the 22nd May 1919.

Mr. Richards’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates, The Junction Soldiers' Memorial and the Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Lance’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Plot II Row B Grave 17) memorialised at parent's unmarked gravesite at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 1-72. 57.
