Corporal Alfred Hayward Butler (Service Nos:NX73545/NX505908) enlisted in the AIF on 2 December 1941 as a Private attached to General Details Depot, marched out to 15 Field Ambulance in 1942. Private Butler was attached to 2 Motor Ambulance Convoy (MAC) on 22 August 1943 when he embarked with his Unit from Brisbane for Port Moresby on board the JW Grimes. Promoted to Corporal on 22 May 1944, he embarked from Lae for Brisbane on board the Katoomba on 16 April 1945, serving again with 2 MAC in Lae in June/August 1945. Corporal Butler was attached to 3 MAC at Discharge on 15 November 1945. He then served in the Interim Army (31 March 1947 - 20 October 1947) as a Private attached to HQ Eastern Command.
Ted was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1914, second of three children of Frederick Robert Butler (b1887 in Lithgow, New South Wales) and Katherine (Katie) Edith Sheen (b1888 in Newcastle, New South Wales). Frederick worked as a Night Operator and Booking Clerk with Esk Bank in Lithgow, and he and Katie married in 1911 in Katoomba. The couple settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Frederick was a Timekeeper. Following their divorce in 1933, Frederick worked in Sydney as a Clerk.
Ted was an Actor in Sydney in 1935 when he married Olive Letitia Hancock (b1913 in Sydney, New South Wales). The couple settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Ted worked as a Clicker and Salesman. Following his Discharge from the Army, Ted and Olive settled in Sydney - Ted worked as a Truck Driver and Airline Employee. Ted died in 1992 and Olive in 2004.
