Lieutenant Colonel William Stanley Forsyth's (Service Nos:N75456/N393296/NX71034) military service spanned almost four decades, from 1 September 1906 when he enlisted in the Australian Garrison Artillery as a Gunner, to 2nd Lieutenant with Garrison Artillery (Coastal Defence) from 7 August 1914 to 20 October 1918. As Lieutenant Colonel in 1927 he was appointed Commander of the new 33rd - 41st Battalion formed in Armidale, Tamworth, Gunnedah and Quirinda, and during at stay in London that year was attached to the Duke of Wellington's Regiment in the Aldershot Command. Lieutenant Colonel Forsyth served in WWII - 10 June 1940 to 16 May 1941 with Sea Transport (No 1 Shops Staff - Voyage Only); 17 May 1941 - 25 December 1941, and in 1942 with ACMF Camp Staff Casino. His three sons (Adam, Keith and William) served in WWII.

William was born in Cooma, New South Wales in 1888, second of six children of Adam Forsyth (b1857 in Glencoe, South Australia) and Emily Susannah Fairey Wilcox (b1864 in Gawler, South Australia). Adam was working in Hamilton, Victoria as a Municipal Engineer in 1884 when he and Emily married in Hamilton. The couple moved to New South Wales in 1885, living in Cooma and Goulburn where they raised their family, and later living in Sydney. Adam joined the Civil Service, working as a Surveyor and Draftsman with the District Office of the Lands Department. Adam was active in the community - he was Alderman in the Cooma and Vaucluse Municipal Councils, as Mayor of Vaucluse, and was a senior officer of the Masonic Lodge in Cooma, an Elder of the Presbyterian Church and active in Scots Church in Sydney.

William was working as an Auditor in Sydney in 1914 when he married Edna Alice Lark (b1893 in Sydney, New South Wales). William and Edna settled in Armidale, where they raised their family and William was a Chartered Accountant and Local Government Auditor (Partner in Vigars & Sky FS-CKA Armidale and Inverell Branches). According to Who's Who Australia (1947), William was Chairman of the Armidale State Electorate ACP; of the Armidale Legacy Contact Group and of the Local Government Auditors' Association of New South Wales; and President of the Armidale Literary Institute. Edna died in 1965, and William died in 1966.
