Corporal John Francis Caddy (Service No:NX46673) initially Served in the RANVR as an Able Seaman (Service No:1919) before enlisting in the AIF on 15 July 1940 as a Private with 4th Battalion and 1st Infantry Training Battalion. Private Caddy - graded Driver Mechanic - served in the Middle East (9 April 1941 - 8 August 1942) with 16 Australian Infantry Training Battalion, and in New Guinea (15 September 1942 - 24 June 1943) with 2/1 Infantry Battalion. Corporal Caddy was attached to District Area Command of NSW at Discharge on 26 September 1945.
John was born in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1909, eldest of two children of George Edward Caddy (b1881 in London, England) and Lydia Ashworth (b1880 in Bendigo, Victoria). George immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1882, and in 1909 he and Lydia married in Burrowa. The couple settled in Newcastle, where they raised their family and George was a Waterside Worker.
John was working in Newcastle as a Pay Clerk in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1945 in Murwillumbah married Eileen May Gittoes (b1915 in Murwillumbah, New South Wales). John and Eileen settled in Newcastle, where they raised their family and John worked as a Clerk until retirement. John died in 1990 and Eileen in 2000.
