Private Athol James Coffey (Service No:NX85841) enlisted in the Australian Army in January 1942. He served with 18th Infantry Battalion and AA Section Fortress Workshops in New Guinea (1944). He was Discharged in September 1944.

The eldest son of James Edmund Alexander Coffee (b1897 in Moama, NSW) and Amy Beatrice Sales (b1893 in Sydney, NSW), Athol was born in 1921 in Sydney, NSW. James (a Farmer) and Amy married in 1921 in Liverpool, NSW. James had served in WWI, and he and Amy settled in Eden Monaro NSW before moving to Sydney - James worked as a Roller Driver and Labourer.

Athol was a Wire Worker in Canley Vale, NSW prior to his enlistment, and in June 1948 married Norma Betty Quinn (b1929 in Sydney, NSW) - Norma worked as a Spinner.  Athol died in 1982 and Norma in 2019.
