Private James Worland (Service Nos:VX1946/V391055) initially enlisted in the AIF on 24 October 1939 and served in the Middle East (Egypt and Palestine) and Greece with 2nd/11th Infantry Battalion. Private Worland was attached to 2 AASC Amm Coy at Discharge (Medically Unfit) on 15 July 1942. Private Worland re-enlisted on 29 July 1942, serving in the ACMF with Victorian Line of Communication Rec Camp until 26 July 1943, when he was released under Manpower Directorate to work with the Dehydration Commission.
James was born in Seymour, Victoria in 1918, youngest of three children of Henri James Worland (b1883 in Warrnambool, Victoria) and his first wife Charlotte (Lottie) Rachel Fletcher (b1885 in Warrnambool, Victoria). Henri - Warrnambool Town Clerk - and Lottie married in 1911 in Warrnambool and settled in Seymour, where they raised their three sons and Henri was Shire Secretary with the Seymour Shire Council. Following Lottie's death in April 1918, Henri returned to Warrnabool where, in 1919, he remarried to Annie (Birdie) Ada Bird (b1893 in Bairnsdale, Victoria). Henri and Birdie settled in Warrnambool, where they raised their family and Henri worked for the Shire as Town Clerk, and was a JP and Magistrate, and member of the Warrnambool Hospital Committe and Technical School Council.
James worked in Warrnambool as a Labourer, and was a Horticulturalist when he enlisted in the Army. In 1944 in Melbourne, he married Jean Matheson (b1919 in Williamstonw, Victoria) - Jean worked as a Salesgirl for Edments Ltd in Melbourne and served in the ACMF (Service No:VF 345303). James and Jean lived in Toowoomba, QLD in the early 1950s - James was Curator of Parks and Gardens, and in the mid 1950s the family settled in Darwin, NT where James was Curator of Parks and Gardens until the mid 1960s. The family returned to Melbourne, where James was a Horticulturalist until his death in 1969. Jean died in 1996.
