Enlistment

Frederick Thomas Wooderson was born in Newcastle, New South Wales. His exact birth year is not definitively known, but records indicate he was around 16 years old when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on July 1, 1940.

Military Service

Frederick's military career began with his assignment to the 4th Infantry Training Battalion (I.T. Bn). He quickly moved to the 2/1st Infantry Battalion, where he underwent extensive training to prepare for overseas deployment.

Siege of Tobruk

In early 1941, Frederick was deployed to the Middle East. He took part in the Siege of Tobruk, Serving with the 2/1st Infantry Battalion, Frederick played a role in the defense of Tobruk against Axis forces from May to June 1941.

On June 9, 1941, during the Siege of Tobruk, Frederick was wounded in action, sustaining grenade injuries to his left eye and legs. These severe injuries required immediate medical attention, leading to his evacuation and treatment at various medical facilities. Despite the physical toll, Frederick's resilience and determination were evident as he recovered and continued his service.

Redeployed to New Guinea

After recovering from his injuries, Frederick was stationed in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in early 1942 to defend against potential Japanese attacks. Later that year, he was redeployed to New Guinea for the Kokoda Track campaign, serving as a runner. Despite the dangers, he bravely carried messages until he was shot during a mission.

Discharged

During his service, Frederick faced numerous challenges, including severe injuries and the continuous pressures of combat. His military record also shows he underwent a court-martial and subsequent imprisonment for various charges, such as being absent without leave (AWOL). Frederick experienced significant stress during his service, which likely contributed to these incidents.
