  • 1st October 1918 - admitted to 43rd General Hospital with Pneumonia and Malaria. Her condition worsened and she became dangerously ill before succumbing to the illnesses on 10th October 1918.

    Biography

    Father Mr Alexander Buchanan MUNRO and  Mother  Emma Phillis JENKINS of 5 Gillies Street, Alfredton, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.

    Described on enlisting as 34 years old; nursing Sister; single; lived at parents address;
    5' 5" tall; 136 lbs; medium fresh complexion; blue eyes; brown hair; Church of England.

    16/8/1916           Enlisted with the British Indian Service AMC AIF

    22/8/1916           Embarked from Melbourne onboard the RMS Mooltan
                               with the  Australian Army Nursing Service

    The RMS Mooltan weighed 9,621 tonnes with an average cruise speed of 18.5 knots or 34.26 kmph. It was owned by the P & O SN Co, London.  Torpedoed and sunk by UC27 on 26 July 1917.

    The RMS Malwa weighed 10,883 tons with an average cruise speed of 15 knots or 27.78 kmph. It was owned by the P & O SN Co, London.

    24/8/1917           Embarked on HT Manitou at Alexandria for Salonika, Greece

    She was on active service in northern Greece in support of the British Campaign of
    Thessalonika .

    1/9/1917             Temporary Head Sister

    1/10/1918           Admitted to the 43rd General Hospital, Salonika, Greece with pneumonia
                               and malaria.

    8/10/1918          Seriously ill with Malaria in 43rd General Hospital, Salonika
    9/10/1918          Dangerously ill with Pneumonia and Malaria
                              in 43rd General Hospital, Salonika

    10/10/1918       Gertrude gave up her fight and died of Pneumonia and Malaria
                             in the 43rd General Hospital, Salonika.

    Gertrude is the only Australian service person commemorated in this cemetery.
