Elder of two siblings (Dorothy and James) who served in WWII, Private Dorothy Honor McLeish (Service Nos:N105031/NX76417) served in the Army - Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), later the Australian Army Women's Medical Service (AAWMS) - as a Nursing Orderly from 29 September 1941 to 15 April 1943. Attached to 113 and 12 Australian General Hospitals (AGH), Private McLeish served in Colombo on board 2nd/2nd Hospital Ship (HS Wanganella) from 7 December 1941 to 9 January 1943.

Dorothy was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1920, eldest of three children of James Edgar McLeish (b1894 in Warren, New South Wales) and Dorothy Hilda Bucknell (b1894 in Kogarah, New South Wales). James was a Grazier at Swamp Camp via Quambone in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF (Bombardier; Service No:18700), and he and Dorothy Snr married in 1919 in Sydney - Dorothy's parents ran Quambone Station. James and Dorothy Snr lived in Sydney and Coonamble (Narraway and Thurn), where they raised their family and James was a Grazier.

Dorothy was occupied with Home Duties prior to her service in the Army, and in 1944 in Sydney married Oliver (David/OD) Jackson DSO, OBE (b1919 in London, England) - David served in the Army, enlisting in 1937 as a Cadet at Royal Military College Duntroon and retiring as a Brigadier in 1974. Dorothy and David lived around Australia following David's military career, before retiring to Sydney, David died in 2007 and Dorothy died in 2007.
