George joined the 3rd Tunnelling Company and left from Melbourne on board the Ulysses on 25 October 1916, arriving at Folkestone, England prior to proceeding to France on 28 January 1917. He served in France with his unit throughout the duration of the war. George returned to England on 2 April 1919 then returned to Australia on the Borda on 23 June and was discharged on 1 August.
The three Wood brothers –George, William and Samuel all fought in World War One. This sacrifice by families, of sending 2, 3 or more sons away with the 1st A.I.F, highlights the strong sense of duty and commitment that was evident throughout the Adelaide Hills region.
