On the 8th August 1970, Private Peter Barrass, 35th Battalion (Reg No-1060), labourer from School Hill, Minmi, New South Wales and Hamilton?, N.S.W., died at Hamilton, N.S.W., age 75 years 10 months, and his ashes have been interred at Newcastle Memorial Park, N.S.W., date unknown. Location of Ashes - R S W 14 C/141.
Born at West Wallsend, New South Wales on the 2nd October 1894 to Robert Cole, died 25.2.1920, West Wallsend, N.S.W., age 66, buried at West Wallsend General Cemetery, N.S.W., GENERAL_OLD_SECTION_3. H 17, from Natleys Paddock, Wilson Street, West Wallsend, New South Wales and Carrington Street, West Wallsend, N.S.W., and Mary Barrass nee Marland, died 2.1.1922, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 60, sleeping at West Wallsend General Cemetery, N.S.W., GENERAL_OLD_SECTION_3. H 18; husband of Alma May Barrass nee Woods, born 25.8.1899, Minmi, N.S.W., married 1940, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 2.3.1977, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 77 years 6 months, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Left Hand Side, Section 30, Plot 072, as of the 3rd March 2024, metal cross with broken concrete and barely legible plaque, very sad.
Peter enlisted on the 11th December 1915, age 21 years 2 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.
Admitted to hospital 14.10.1917 (exhaustion).
Granted leave to England from 15.1.1918 to 29.1.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 3.9.1919.
Peter arrived home on the 24th October 1919, being discharged on the 7th November 1919.
Report that Peter was a pall-bearer with 3 fellow Minmi soldiers at the funeral for Private William Charles Brown, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion & 30th Battalion, Reg No-3073, who died about 5.30 p.m. on the 21.8.1920 at Wallsend Hospital, N.S.W. William had died from injuries at Stockton Borehole Colliery, age 30 years 3 months. Laid to rest at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W. on the 23.8.1920, Left Hand Side, Section 05, Plot 008.
