Biography

"HONORS FOR SOLDIERS. CORPORAL-BUGLER R. L. DICK.

For gailantry under fire in France, Corporal Robert L. Dick, who enlisted for service in Adelaide, has received the military medal. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon, of Euston-terrace, Croydon — friends of the young soldier— have received the news of the distinction conferred upon him. Corporal Dick went to the front as a bugler. On September 3 and 4 he acted as dispatch runner, and by his work gained the commendation of his superior officers, and on a subsequent Sunday, after a church parade, General Birdwood pinned the ribbon of the decoration upon his tunic. Corporal Dick is a son of Mr. Alexander Dick, a plasterer, of Stirling, Scotland. He was apprenticed to his father's trade in his home town. He joined the Stirling Boys' Brigade and served as a lieutenant in that body. He came to Adelaide about 3½ years ago, and early in 1915 he enlisted. On leaving Australia for Egypt he was presented with a bugle by Sir Josiah Symon K.C. — himself a Stirling man. After a period in Egypt Corporal Dick went into action in France." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 09 Dec 1916 (nla.gov.au)
