Harold was the son of Oliver James and Elizabeth Adelaide Smith, of Brookdale Station, Burketown, Queensland.

His older brother, 5221 Pte. Oliver Hambleton Smith 47th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Messines, Belgium on 7 June 1917, aged 23.

Harold was badly wounded in the left shoulder on 20 January 1917 and died of his wounds three days later in a Casualty Clearing Station based in Mericourt-L'Abbe, France.
