George was the son of James and Annie Reynolds of Zeehan, Tasmania. He was living in Melbourne when he enlisted but stated that he had served for 3 years in the Tasmanian Rangers.

His younger brother, 2050 Pte Reuben Richard Reynolds 26th Battalion AIF had been killed in action at Pozieres in 1916, aged 23.
