2nd Lt. Percy Eric Palmer was shot down in Belgium. He was only 20 years old, and had only been with the Flying Corps for 4 months. He was flying a Nieuport of No 29 Squadron RFC when killed in action on 17 July 1917. He had left Poperinghe aerodrome on a patrol at 1050 and was shot down after combat with enemy aeroplanes at about 1215. Percy was on only his second 'stunt' having joined the 29th Squadron with him some 3-4 days earlier. His first 'stunt' in No 29 squadron the day before he died resulted in him crashing his aircraft after being hit by anti-aircraft fire. Percy was from Sydney NSW and had served with the 1st Battalion AIF in France where he was wounded in action on the 28 June 1916.
His elder brother, Captain Herbert Leopold Palmer 55th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action only 4 months previously, on the 11th March, 1917.
